All About Your Piano

Digital vs Acoustic

  • How often should I tune my piano?
Piano manufacturers recommend two to four tunings a year. The more money you have invested in your piano, the more important it is to follow that advice.

Every piano should get tuned at least once a year. Pianos that are used more heavily, such as for teaching or by more advanced players, should be tuned more often. Pianos used for performances should be tuned before every performance.

New pianos need to be tuned more frequently during their first year due to the stretching of new strings.

Tuning is not the only maintenance required! There are thousands of moving parts that need regular adjustments.
  • How does a piano go out of tune?
Changes in humidity level greatly effect a piano's tuning. In Alaska our homes go from above 50% humidity in late summer to below 20% humidity in the winter. The pitch rises as humidity rises and falls as humidity falls with the swelling and shrinking of the soundboard. Adding a room humidifier or installing a piano humidity control system helps to mitigate the humidity level swings and stabilizes a tuning. I recommend purchasing a hygrometer so that you can monitor your home's humidity level.
